Fifty years after August 15, there are still concerns about Bangabandhu’s safety.

The assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975 stands as a national tragedy borne of both conspiracy and profound security failures. Despite warnings from close political allies and foreign leaders, Bangabandhu continued to reside at his easily accessible home on 32 Dhanmondi Road, rather than at the more secure Ganobhaban. Intelligence agencies and the military command failed to detect or respond to the looming threat, while key officers and ministers showed complicity or remained silent. On the fateful night, the security detail was swiftly overpowered and no rescue attempt was made. The ease with which the plotters isolated and attacked the presidential residence revealed a complete institutional breakdown. This watershed event not only marked the brutal loss of Bangladesh’s founding father and much of his family but also exposed enduring vulnerabilities within the nation’s security apparatus—a legacy that continues to be examined half a century later.

“Police in Assam’s Silchar arrested two hospital staff — a 19-year-old housekeeping worker and a 28-year-old technician — for allegedly vandalising the dialysis unit at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, damaging eight machines and crippling treatment for dozens of poor patients. The act is suspected to be linked to a dispute over illegal payments collected in the facility’s free dialysis wing.”

In Tawang, the Army, ITBP, and residents march at a high altitude while carrying a 100-meter tricolour.

“In Chuna, a forward area of Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district at 14,000 feet, the Indian Army, ITBP, and local residents celebrated Independence Day with a ‘Tiranga March’, carrying a 100-metre national flag through the Himalayan landscape. The event, led by Assistant Commissioner Thutan Wangchu, was followed by a cleanliness drive to preserve the fragile ecosystem, symbolising unity, patriotism, and the shared responsibility of protecting both the nation’s frontiers and natural heritage.”

Harmeet Singh, the DGP of Assam, exhorts the populace to celebrate Independence Day and resist demands for a boycott.

Assam DGP Harmeet Singh has urged citizens to ignore boycott calls from insurgent groups and to join the 79th Independence Day celebrations wholeheartedly. Reviewing preparations at Guwahati’s Khanapara Parade Ground, he said such appeals are outdated and unrepresentative of Assam’s progress, noting, “No person who truly loves Assam would engage in anti-national activities.” His comments came after ULFA-I and the NSCN (Yung Aung) faction called for a bandh across parts of the Northeast on August 15. Tight security measures have been put in place, with 27 parade contingents and additional forces deployed to ensure peaceful celebrations.
