Cachar, April 5, 2025: The Cachar District Court has sentenced Gobora Bhumij, a resident of the Lower Division of Udharbond Tea Estate, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a woman in a tea estate in 2020. The court also imposed a ₹10,000 fine on the convict.

According to case records, the incident occurred on March 3, 2020, at Endogram Tea Estate under the Udharbond area of Cachar district. The victim, a female tea garden worker, was heading to the garden office after being summoned when Bhumij forcibly dragged her into a nearby forest and raped her.

Following the attack, a case was registered at Udharbond Police Station, and an FIR was lodged naming Gobora Bhumij as the accused. The police conducted an investigation and later submitted a chargesheet under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

After an extensive legal process, the district court found Bhumij guilty and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine. After the verdict, he was transferred to Silchar Central Jail to serve his sentence.

The ruling is being seen as a step toward justice for the victim and sends a strong message against crimes targeting women in the region.
