Silchar Shock: Ophthalmologist Booked for Allegedly Assaulting Toddler During Eye Treatment

Silchar | BarakOutlet Desk | April 17, 2025: A senior ophthalmologist from Silchar has been booked following serious allegations of physically assaulting a 2-year-old child during a medical examination at a prominent private eye hospital. The incident, which took place on Monday evening at Choudhury Eye Clinic, has ignited public outrage after a video shared by the child’s mother went viral on social media platforms.

The accused doctor has been identified as Dr. Haimanti Choudhury, a well-known ophthalmologist in the region. As per police sources, she has been detained for preliminary questioning and her statement has been recorded following a formal complaint lodged by the child’s mother.

In a detailed video statement, the mother described the traumatic experience her son allegedly went through. “We had taken him for an eye check-up. During the treatment, the doctor mentioned some iron particle had entered his eye. But all of a sudden, she started slapping my child — right in front of me,” she stated emotionally.

The mother claimed the child was slapped multiple times during the session, leading to injuries that left the toddler nearly unconscious. Tensions escalated quickly at the clinic, leading to a confrontation between the family and hospital staff. Both parties reported the incident to the police, prompting a swift response from the Silchar Sadar Police Station.

Silchar Superintendent of Police confirmed to BarakOutlet that complaints from both sides have been received and appropriate cases have been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). An official investigation is underway.

In a counter statement, Dr. H.K. Choudhury, also affiliated with the clinic, offered a different version of the events. He claimed the child was suffering from a serious eye condition requiring anaesthesia, but the family was hesitant. “Dr. Haimanti was attempting an alternative extraction method which involved a firm handling of the child. Unfortunately, this may have been misinterpreted by the parents,” he explained.

The incident has sparked widespread debate in medical and public circles about ethics, communication, and child safety in clinical settings. With public sentiment running high, authorities have assured that the case is being pursued with utmost sensitivity and diligence.
