Union Cabinet Approves Rs 22,864 Cr Greenfield High-Speed Corridor from Shillong to Silchar

Silchar, 30th April, 2025: In a historic move to bolster connectivity in the Northeast, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a Greenfield Access-Controlled High-Speed Corridor from Shillong to Silchar. The project, sanctioned by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, will be constructed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a capital cost of Rs 22,864 crore.

Spanning 166.80 km, the ambitious corridor will stretch from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam, with 144.80 km falling in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam. This state-of-the-art four-lane highway is set to revolutionize transport and logistics in the region, significantly reducing both travel time and distance between Guwahati and Silchar.

The corridor is poised to enhance regional connectivity to key northeastern states including Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur, with far-reaching socio-economic benefits for the Barak Valley and surrounding areas. It will pass through strategic locations such as Ri Bhoi, East and West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, and Cachar district in Assam.

According to the government, the project will also unlock economic potential by boosting industrial growth in Meghalaya, particularly in the cement and coal sectors, and will serve as a key artery for national and international tourism, linking scenic spots through well-connected airports at Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar.

The new corridor will also decongest the existing National Highway 06, integrating seamlessly with major highways like NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37, ensuring smooth connectivity across major towns such as Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khliehriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.

Aligned with the vision of PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and Atmanirbhar Bharat, the project is expected to generate employment, foster economic growth, and uplift infrastructure standards across Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Once completed, the Shillong–Silchar Greenfield Corridor is anticipated to become a lifeline for the Northeast, facilitating faster, safer, and more efficient transport while transforming the logistics landscape of the region.
