
Massive Infrastructure Boost for Assam: ₹22,000 Crore Guwahati–Silchar Highway Project Approved; Silchar Airport Proposal Fast-Tracked
Guwahati, 2nd April, 2025: In a significant development poised to transform the connectivity and infrastructure landscape of Assam, the Union Cabinet has approved a landmark investment of over ₹22,000 crore for the construction of an access-controlled national highway between Guwahati and Silchar. This ambitious project is expected to be a game changer for the state, improving road travel, trade, and economic integration between the Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys.
Announcing the development, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the update via social media, emphasizing the strategic importance of the project. “The Guwahati–Silchar access-controlled national highway, with an investment of over ₹22,000 crore approved by the Union Cabinet, will be a game changer for Assam,” he stated.
In addition to this major announcement, the Chief Minister also revealed that the long-pending demand for a new airport in Silchar is gaining momentum. Following his recent meeting with Mr. Samir Sinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, it has been confirmed that the approval process for the proposed Silchar Airport has now been fast-tracked.
This dual development — a high-speed highway and a potential new airport — is expected to significantly enhance connectivity, boost regional development, and unlock new economic opportunities for South Assam and the Barak Valley region.
