BJP-AGP Alliance Fields Kanad Purkayastha and Birendra Prasad for Rajya Sabha Polls from Assam
Dispur, June 10: In a key political development ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP-AGP alliance on Monday formally announced its candidates for Assam’s upcoming seats in the Upper House. Shri Kanad Purkayastha and Shri Birendra Prasad filed their nominations at Gopinath Bordoloi Bhawan in Dispur, in a ceremony marked by high-level attendance and visible alliance strength.
The filing was conducted in the presence of several top state and national leaders, including Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and State BJP President Dilip Saikia, underscoring the political significance and internal cohesion of the NDA bloc in Assam.
Kanad Purkayastha, a respected public figure and senior advocate, along with Birendra Prasad, a seasoned socio-political worker, will represent the BJP-Asom Gana Parishad alliance, which continues to dominate Assam’s legislative landscape.

Senior leaders extended their congratulations and conveyed confidence in a decisive victory. The tone of the nomination process indicated a calculated and unified electoral strategy aimed at reinforcing the alliance’s representation in Parliament.
Chief Minister Dr. Sarma expressed optimism that the duo would be strong voices for Assam in the Rajya Sabha. “This is a step forward in ensuring the Northeast continues to have assertive representation at the national level,” he noted after the event.
The nominations come at a time when national political dynamics are shifting post-Lok Sabha elections, and the BJP-AGP alliance is keen to maintain its stronghold both at the state and central levels.
The Rajya Sabha elections are expected to see minimal contest from opposition parties in Assam, signaling a relatively smooth electoral path for the alliance’s nominees.
