Teen Girl Dies After Snake Bite in Kanakpur, Lakhipur LAC; Delay in Medical Aid Cited

Silchar, June 10 : In a tragic incident that underscores the dangers of relying on traditional healing over modern medicine, a teenage girl from the Kanakpur area under Lakhipur Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) lost her life after being bitten by a snake on Tuesday evening.

According to local sources, the incident occurred around 4 PM. Soon after the snakebite, instead of immediately rushing the victim to the nearest hospital, the family reportedly sought the help of traditional healers, commonly known as ojhas. Such practices, though deeply rooted in local customs, often delay access to critical medical intervention necessary for treating venomous bites.

Witnesses state that the girl remained under the care of the ojhas for a significant amount of time. It was only after her condition deteriorated that she was transported to a hospital. However, by the time she reached the medical facility, she had already succumbed to the effects of the venom.

Medical professionals emphasize that time is a critical factor in the treatment of snakebites, and delays—even by a few minutes—can prove fatal. Antivenom and supportive care are the only scientifically proven treatments, and any reliance on non-medical methods drastically reduces the chances of survival.

This tragic event has sparked renewed calls for greater awareness in rural and semi-urban communities about the importance of seeking immediate medical attention in cases of snakebites or other serious health emergencies.

Local authorities and health officials are expected to take steps to increase public awareness campaigns in the region, aiming to educate residents on the life-saving importance of timely hospital care.
