Illegal Cigarette Haul Worth Lakhs Seized Near Balachhra Toll Gate by Cachar Police; One Arrested
Silchar, July 11: In a significant breakthrough in the fight against contraband trade, Cachar Police on Thursday intercepted a truck near Balachhra Toll Gate and seized a massive consignment of illegal cigarettes. The operation, conducted following specific intelligence inputs, led to the recovery of 2,920 boxes containing approximately 5,84,000 packets of smuggled cigarettes from a truck bearing registration number RJ 07 GD 8613.
Acting swiftly, law enforcement officials stopped the suspicious vehicle near the toll gate and conducted a thorough inspection. Upon opening the cargo, authorities discovered the large cache of contraband neatly concealed inside the vehicle. The estimated value of the seized goods runs into several lakhs of rupees, although officials have yet to issue an official valuation pending further investigation.
One individual, identified as the driver of the truck, has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. Police sources have confirmed that initial questioning is underway to ascertain the origins and intended destination of the illegal consignment. Authorities suspect an inter-state smuggling nexus and have indicated that further arrests could follow.
Speaking to BarakOutlet, a senior officer involved in the operation stated, “We have intensified our surveillance operations across strategic points in the district. This seizure is a result of coordinated vigilance, and we remain committed to dismantling the networks involved in such unlawful activities.”
This interception comes amid a series of recent operations targeting illicit trade across the Barak Valley region. With rising concerns over the health implications and revenue losses caused by unregulated tobacco products, enforcement agencies are under increasing pressure to curb the illegal cigarette trade.
The seized goods have been handed over to the appropriate legal and regulatory authorities for examination and formal procedures. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is ongoing.
