Three NIT Silchar Students Allegedly Assaulted Outside Campus; Safety Concerns Raised
Silchar, Dec 19: In a disturbing incident raising serious concerns over student safety, three students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar were allegedly assaulted by a group of youths near the institute campus on the evening of December 18.
According to a formal complaint submitted to the institute authorities, the incident occurred around 6:30 PM when the students had gone to a nearby eatery outside the campus premises, as hostel mess services were reportedly closed due to vacation.
The complainant, Madhurita Purkayastha, a student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, stated that she, along with her batchmate Ashar Alam and Shubham Kumar (M.Tech, CSE), was confronted by a group of approximately 20–25 local youths at the establishment. The group allegedly locked the premises from inside and began questioning the students.

The situation escalated after the group made repeated communal remarks, allegedly objecting to the presence of a male and female student together. Despite clarifications that the interaction was purely academic, the harassment reportedly continued.
As per the complaint, Ashar Alam was physically attacked by the group, sustaining multiple injuries after being struck with heavy objects. When the female student attempted to intervene, she was allegedly subjected to verbal abuse and personal remarks, while another student who tried to assist was also assaulted. A witness from outside the premises reportedly observed the incident.
All three students sustained injuries, with Ashar Alam suffering a head injury that required stitches at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). The other two students reportedly suffered bruises and physical injuries. The police were contacted immediately, and medical treatment was provided.
The students have expressed deep concern over their safety, stating that the incident has left them physically injured, mentally disturbed, and fearful, especially given its proximity to the institute campus. The complainant highlighted that such incidents severely affect the sense of security among students, particularly women and those belonging to minority communities.
In her communication to the administration, the student has sought institutional support, protective measures, and preventive steps to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in the future. She has also conveyed her willingness to submit medical records, witness statements, and other relevant documents for inquiry.
The incident has sparked discussions on the need for enhanced security measures, coordination with local authorities, and improved student safety infrastructure in and around educational institutions.
No official statement from the institute administration or local police was available at the time of filing this report.
