“A Bangladeshi national was apprehended near the Seven Sisters Falls Viewpoint after the vehicle he was traveling in evaded a police checkpoint in Sohra. Authorities intercepted the vehicle after a chase and discovered that one of the occupants, identified as Robiul Islam, was attempting illegal entry into Bangladesh. Police also detained two suspected facilitators linked to cross-border movement. A formal case has been registered under The Foreigners Act, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the network behind such activities.”

After a violent Tipra Motha protest, government buildings are vandalised in Tripura.

A dispute over government social pension schemes led to violent protests in Hejamara block, West Tripura, as Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supporters accused officials of favoritism in selecting beneficiaries. Protesters stormed the BDO and CDPO offices, vandalizing property and sealing officials’ chambers. The unrest escalated with demands for an immediate release of the revised pension list, prompting heavy police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) deployment to restore order. The incident follows the state’s decision to expand pension benefits to 5,000 more individuals.

ASSAM RIFLES RECOVERS ILLEGAL FOREIGN CIGARETTES WORTH RS 2 CRORES FROM JIRIBAM

Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Manipur Police, seized illegal foreign cigarettes worth Rs 2 crores from Savomphai in Jiribam district on 20 May 2025. The contraband, comprising 98 bags each containing 1000 cigarette packets, was being smuggled via boat from Tipaimukh and was intended for Bangladesh. Two individuals were apprehended. This operation highlights Assam Rifles’ resolute stance against smuggling and their continued efforts to dismantle cross-border illicit networks.

India’s first entirely literate state is Mizoram.

Mizoram has officially become India’s first fully literate state, a landmark achievement announced by Chief Minister Lalduhoma at a celebratory event at Mizoram University. The milestone was reached through the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, a targeted literacy initiative that helped the state surpass a 98.2% literacy rate.
Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary praised Mizoram’s success, crediting it to community-driven efforts and visionary leadership. The campaign mobilized 292 volunteer educators and focused on over 3,000 non-literate individuals, ensuring widespread participation. Officials now view Mizoram’s literacy model as a blueprint for replication in other states under the National Education Policy.

Committee in Meghalaya urges suspension of Indo-Bangladesh border fence inspection
