Tuhin Kanta Pandey Appointed as New SEBI Chairman, Replacing Madhabi Puri Buch.

New Delhi, February 28: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Pandey, a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, will serve a three-year term, replacing Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure ends today.

According to the official government order, Pandey will assume charge from the date of his appointment or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Before this, he was overseeing the Department of Revenue in the Finance Ministry, a role he took over on January 9, 2025, following the transfer of his predecessor, Sanjay Malhotra, to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as its Governor.

Born in 1965, Pandey holds a master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the University of Birmingham, UK. His experience in financial governance is expected to play a crucial role in SEBI’s regulatory oversight of India’s capital markets.

Madhabi Puri Buch, the outgoing SEBI chief and the first woman to hold the position, introduced significant reforms during her tenure, including stricter regulations in the derivatives market to safeguard retail investors.

With Pandey at the helm, industry stakeholders will be keenly watching for new policy directions and regulatory measures aimed at strengthening India’s financial markets.
