₹25,000 Crore Guwahati–Silchar Expressway, Assam’s First Underwater Tunnel, and Highway Expansions Reviewed by NHIDCL Chief

BarakOutlet Desk, April 7, 2025, Guwahati: In a high-level infrastructure review held today, Dr. Krishan Kumar, the Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), met with key stakeholders to assess the progress of Assam’s most ambitious transport development ventures.

Topping the agenda was the ₹25,000 crore Guwahati–Silchar Expressway, a transformative project aimed at drastically reducing travel time between Barak and Brahmaputra Valleys. The expressway, once completed, is expected to boost trade and regional connectivity across Assam and beyond.

The second major project under discussion was the highly anticipated Numaligarh–Gohpur Underwater Tunnel. If executed as planned, it will be the first of its kind in Northeast India, enabling seamless passage beneath the Brahmaputra River — a technological and engineering milestone.

Additionally, the NHIDCL is also spearheading National Highway expansion works along two key corridors:

  • Baihata Chariali to Tezpur
  • Gohpur to Kulajan

These corridors are being widened and upgraded to ensure smoother logistics and safer travel, thereby strengthening the state’s highway infrastructure.

Dr. Krishan Kumar emphasized the Centre’s commitment to fast-tracking these projects while maintaining environmental safeguards and local stakeholder coordination.

These developments signal a new era of multi-modal connectivity and high-speed transit infrastructure for Assam, particularly enhancing mobility in Barak Valley, North Bank, and central Assam regions.
