1.5 Crore Sanctioned, But No Bridge in Sight: Borkhola Residents Demand Accountability
Borkhola, July 9: Residents of Borkhola constituency have voiced strong protests over the long-pending completion of a sanctioned bridge project, despite the release of ₹1.5 crore from the government exchequer. The bridge, intended to connect several interior villages to the main road network, remains incomplete nearly two years after the sanction, causing immense hardship to thousands.
Villagers allege that although the project was inaugurated with much fanfare and funds were released on paper, the on-ground work has either stalled or never meaningfully started. The incomplete structure, now overtaken by weeds and debris, stands as a stark reminder of administrative neglect.
“We had hoped this bridge would change our lives, offering access to schools, markets, and emergency health services. But now it has become a muddy trap during rains,” said a local resident from Chandpur area under Borkhola.
Questions are being raised about the contractor selection process, alleged fund diversion, and lack of monitoring by Public Works Department (PWD) officials. Social activists and local youth bodies have submitted memorandums to the Cachar Deputy Commissioner and threatened democratic agitation if no action is taken within 15 days.
Given the onset of monsoon, the urgency of the matter is growing, especially for schoolchildren and elderly villagers who have to cross makeshift bamboo footpaths in dangerous conditions.
