17th Northeast-Based Chiru Tribal Students’ Conference and Golden Jubilee Celebration Begins

BarakOutlet Correspondent, Lakhipur, January 30: Among India’s various tribal communities, the Chiru tribe is one of the smallest, with only 13 villages across the country. In Assam, the only Chiru tribal village is located in the Lakhipur Assembly constituency. Today, the five-day-long 17th Chiru Tribal Students’ Conference and Golden Jubilee Celebration commenced at Budun Chiru village with great enthusiasm and participation.

The inaugural ceremony saw the presence of several distinguished guests, with Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev attending as the chief guest. Other esteemed attendees included Chiru Tribal Students’ Association founder Pu Alor Thoithek, the founding president of the Chiru Students’ Association Pu M.S. Neichang, and Lakhipur Block President of the All India Trinamool Congress, Namadin Kamai, among others.

The event began with the hoisting of the association’s flag, officially marking the commencement of the grand celebrations. Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, along with the invited dignitaries, carried out the flag-hoisting ceremony. Following this, the Chiru tribal students’ association members performed their traditional folk songs, while men and women from the community showcased their vibrant tribal folk dances, adding cultural grandeur to the event.

One of the key highlights of the opening day was the inauguration of a football tournament at Budun Chiru village playground. The stadium was constructed at a cost of ₹4,10,750 with assistance from the Social, Cultural, Education, and Sports Development Trust, an initiative originally established by former Silchar MP, the late Santosh Mohan Dev. The tournament brought together young athletes from the community, further promoting sportsmanship and unity among the tribal youth.

The conference has also drawn participation from neighboring Manipur, with Chiru tribal youths traveling to Lakhipur to join the celebrations. Over the next five days, various cultural, educational, and developmental programs are scheduled, aiming to preserve and promote the rich heritage of the Chiru community. Discussions will also focus on education, employment opportunities, and socio-economic development for the tribal population.

This grand event highlights the unity and cultural diversity of Assam and the greater Indian subcontinent, showcasing the country’s sovereignty and inclusivity beyond barriers of caste, creed, or religion. The 17th Chiru Tribal Students’ Conference and Golden Jubilee Celebration stands as a proud testament to the enduring spirit and cultural richness of the Chiru community.
