Ancient Nrimata Bhairav Temple in Cachar Faces Encroachment; FIR Lodged

BarakOutlet | Silchar, April 28, 2025: The historic Nrimata Bhairav Temple, a revered spiritual site established over two centuries ago by the Kachari kings in Ujannagar, Cachar district, is reportedly under threat due to land encroachment activities.

Dedicated to Devi Nrimata and Bhairav, the temple holds significant religious and cultural importance across the Barak Valley. Originally encompassing approximately 20 bighas and 19 chhataks of revenue-free (niskar) land, the temple’s premises have witnessed alleged encroachments over several years.

In a recent development, it has been reported that individuals from another faith allegedly intruded upon around two bighas of the temple’s adjacent niskar land, initiating excavation work with intentions to construct residential structures. Responding swiftly, Dilip Kumar Barman, on behalf of the Nrimata-Bhairav Temple Committee, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Borkhola police station against Bahar Uddin Barbhuiya on Saturday. Following the FIR, authorities intervened and halted the unauthorized construction activities.

Leaders from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) West Cachar district unit — including President Bidhu Bhushan Deb, Secretary Jitendra Chandra Das, and Bajrang Dal Coordinator Baibhav Nath — alongside representatives of the Nrimata-Bhairav Seva Samiti — Kishore Barman, Jaharlal Barman, Nand Kishore Barman, and Manojit Nandi — have collectively voiced concern over the escalating encroachment of temple land.

According to the Seva Samiti, multiple parcels (dag and patta numbers) of the temple’s revenue-free land have been under unauthorized occupation and cultivation for an extended period by individuals from various religious backgrounds.

Local residents and cultural advocates have urged immediate administrative intervention to safeguard the sanctity and heritage of the ancient temple, emphasizing the importance of preserving such historical sites for future generations.
