Assistant Professor of Assam University Accused of Sexual Harassment, FIR Filed; Protests Erupt

Silchar – Tensions escalated on the Assam University campus this week as multiple students filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Ajit Kumar Jena, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Social Work, alleging sexual harassment.

The FIR, registered at the local police station on Sunday, includes complaints from both male and female students who accused the professor of inappropriate behavior. Specifics of the accusations have not yet been made public, but the incident has sparked immediate backlash and protests across the university campus.

Speaking to BarakOutlet, Assam University Registrar Pradosh Kiran Nath confirmed that the Vice-Chancellor has taken swift action. “An internal committee has been constituted and an inquiry is underway. The university is committed to ensuring a safe academic environment for all,” he stated.

Student groups have staged demonstrations outside the administrative building, demanding suspension of the accused professor pending investigation and stronger institutional mechanisms to address such complaints. Placards with messages such as “Ensure Campus Safety” and “Justice for Victims” were seen during the protests.

Many students and activists have taken to social media to voice their concerns, calling for transparency in the investigation process and institutional accountability.

As of now, the accused professor has not responded publicly to the allegations. Authorities have urged all parties to maintain peace while the investigation proceeds.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
