First-ever Open Bihu Celebration in Silchar by AASU, Honoring Distinguished Personalities

28th April, Silchar: In a historic event, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Kachar District Committee hosted the first-ever Rongali Bihu festival in Silchar, Assam. The grand celebration was marked by a special ceremony at the Open Bihu Ground, where many renowned personalities from various fields, including artists, writers, and educators from Cachar, were honored. The event showcased vibrant cultural performances, representing different communities residing in the Barak Valley region.

The event, organized at Silchar Town Club Playground, was inaugurated by Krishna Mohan Sing, President of AASU’s Kachar District Committee, who hoisted the flag to mark the beginning of the program. Following that, Ainul Haque Chowdhury, the advisor of the organization, hoisted the Bihu flag. A memorial ceremony was also conducted, which witnessed participation from representatives of various communities.

Professor Ashraf Hossain from the Assamese Department at Gurucharan College delivered an informative speech on Bihu and its cultural significance. Several distinguished personalities were honored for their contributions, including Birendra Barman, the awardee of the Sahitya Akademi, Professor Dr. Nawrem Vidyasagar Singh from the Manipuri Department of Gurucharan College, folklorist Dr. Amalendu Bhattacharya, and other esteemed individuals such as Manasi Sinha, the Executive President of the Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, and various community leaders.

In addition to the ceremonial recognition, a series of cultural performances from different ethnic groups in the Barak Valley region were showcased. These included Bihu, Dhamail, Dimasa, Manipuri, Indigenous Jhumur, Rongmai Naga, Khasi, and Koch dances. The program also featured a traditional Thangta martial arts display and a Bihu dance performance by the group ‘Maupahi Dekai’. The entire event was anchored by Sanjeev Medhi.
