Floods Devastate Rural Sonai: Homes Submerged, Crops Destroyed

Sonai, July 9: Severe floods have inundated several low-lying villages in the Sonai constituency, causing large-scale damage to homes, standing crops, and basic infrastructure. With heavy rainfall continuing for the past few days, water levels in rivers and tributaries have surged, breaching embankments and flooding agricultural lands.

Villages such as Harinagar, Narsingpur, and Bhairabpur have been worst hit, with hundreds of families either displaced or trapped in waterlogged areas. Local residents report that at least 200 homes have been partially or fully submerged. Several schools have been forced to shut down, and paddy fields prepared for sowing have been completely destroyed.

“We had just begun planting the next season’s crops. Now the fields are underwater, and there’s no relief in sight,” said Abdul Rahman, a farmer from Harinagar.

The floodwaters have also washed away small bridges and damaged kutcha roads, severely affecting movement and supply chains in the area. Medical assistance is sparse, and fears of water-borne diseases are mounting.

Despite multiple appeals to the district administration, no significant relief or rescue operation had reached some of the affected hamlets till late Tuesday evening. Residents complain of an absence of food packets, drinking water, or tarpaulin sheets.

“The administration is quick to make announcements but slow to act. We need boats, medicine, and basic food—now, not later,” said a youth volunteer helping evacuate the elderly from submerged homes.

Local NGOs have stepped in with limited aid, but their efforts fall short against the scale of devastation. The public is demanding immediate deployment of SDRF teams, mobile health units, and compensation packages for affected farmers.

As monsoon intensifies, the situation in rural Sonai continues to worsen, turning the region into a humanitarian concern waiting for prompt government action.
