Mahila Samiti Submits Memorandum to D.C. Demanding Safety Measures and Rural Development

Silchar, July 9: A delegation from the Barak Mahila Samiti submitted a detailed memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, highlighting a range of pressing issues affecting women and children in rural and semi-urban areas of the district. The memorandum, handed over on Tuesday, reflects concerns over increasing incidents of harassment, poor road connectivity, and lack of healthcare infrastructure in interior villages.

In their appeal, the women’s group demanded enhanced police patrolling in vulnerable areas, especially during evening hours, citing several instances of chain snatching and verbal abuse near marketplaces and isolated roads. They also flagged concerns over delayed responses from women helplines and insufficient female representation in local law enforcement.

“We are not asking for luxury—just basic safety and dignity while stepping outside our homes,” said Ananya Dutta, one of the lead members of the delegation.

The memorandum further called for:

  • Immediate repair of dilapidated roads in areas such as Sonai and Borkhola
  • Deployment of female health workers in rural dispensaries
  • Proper implementation of government schemes like Ujjwala Yojana and PM Awas Yojana, which they claim are being denied to many deserving women due to documentation loopholes and corruption
  • Setting up of skill development centres for unemployed rural women

The Deputy Commissioner reportedly assured the delegation of a swift review of the grievances and promised to forward the demands to the concerned departments, including the SP’s office and District Rural Development Agency (DRDA).

The submission has sparked public discourse around gender-focused governance in Barak Valley and is expected to gain further momentum with support from local NGOs and educational institutions.
