Stakeholders Meeting Held in Silchar Ahead of Gammon Bridge Closure for Repairs
BarakOutlet | Silchar, April 28, 2025: A high-level stakeholders meeting was convened today at the New Conference Hall of the Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar, Silchar, to discuss the upcoming closure of the Gammon Bridge over the Barak River at Badarpurghat.
The meeting, chaired by the respected Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, focused on the plan to close the Gammon Bridge for major repair work to be undertaken by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). The closure is scheduled to begin from May 21, 2025, and is expected to continue for approximately two months.
During the session, the Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of comprehensive planning and coordination among all concerned authorities to ensure minimal disruption during the closure period. He invited stakeholders to share their insights and concerns, while also taking updates from different departments regarding potential logistical challenges, traffic management, and public convenience measures.
The District Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from all three districts of the Barak Valley — Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi — actively participated and presented their respective inputs. Officials stressed the need for timely public awareness campaigns, alternative traffic arrangements, and close monitoring to manage the situation effectively during the bridge closure.
The repair of the Gammon Bridge, a vital link connecting several parts of Barak Valley and neighboring regions, is considered crucial for long-term infrastructural stability and public safety.
Further detailed advisories and traffic plans are expected to be issued soon by the administration.
