Two Missing in Separate Drowning Incidents in Cachar

Silchar, April 29: Tragedy struck Cachar district on Monday as two separate drowning incidents left a teenager and a young man feared dead in the Sonai and Barak rivers.

In the first incident, 16-year-old Binit Barman, a resident of Ganganagar, disappeared beneath the waters of the Sonai river while swimming with his friends. Local residents immediately rushed to assist, but despite their efforts, Binit could not be rescued. Later, a team from Kachudaram police station, along with personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), launched an extensive search. However, operations were forced to halt as darkness set in.

Meanwhile, in another heartbreaking event at Singerband, a youth identified as Inungba Singh went missing while swimming in the Barak river with four companions. While the others managed to reach the shore safely, Inungba failed to resurface. Responding swiftly, a team from Lakhipur police station, led by Officer-in-Charge Shankar Dayal, along with SDRF officials, conducted a thorough search that lasted over two hours. Despite their best efforts, the young man remained untraced, and the search was suspended after nightfall.

Authorities are expected to resume search operations on Tuesday morning. Locals have urged for increased vigilance around riverbanks, especially during the summer season.
