Udarband Woman Alleges Arson and Attempted Murder by Husband; Seeks Justice from Authorities

Silchar, June 18: In a disturbing incident that underscores the vulnerability of women facing domestic violence, a woman from Panigram (3rd Block), Udarband, has accused her husband, Shafik Uddin Laskar, of setting fire to her house and conspiring to murder her along with their children.

According to Meenara Begum, the victim, the incident took place approximately four months ago near the Star Brick Kiln, when her husband—allegedly accompanied by several associates—deliberately set her home ablaze. Since then, Meenara and her three children have been forced to live in a rented house in Itkhola, Ghaniyala, struggling to survive in fear and uncertainty.

An FIR was filed at the Udarband Police Station against Shafik Uddin Laskar and his alleged accomplices. However, Meenara claims that no arrests have been made to date. “Despite the seriousness of the crime, the accused are moving freely under the open sky. What protection are they enjoying? Why is the law silent?” she questioned, visibly distraught.

She further alleged that her husband is now attempting to unlawfully occupy her share of land and has hired goons to execute a plan to kill her and two of her children. “My children are afraid to step outside. We are living in constant fear for our lives,” she told BarakOutlet.

In an emotional plea, Meenara and her daughter urged the Cachar district administration and police authorities to ensure a fair and thorough investigation, demanding immediate action against the accused. “We are citizens of this country. If the law doesn’t protect us, where do we go?” she asked, her voice trembling.

As the case gains public attention, civil society groups and human rights advocates are expected to rally behind the victim, demanding swift legal redress and stronger protection for vulnerable women.
