India and France Sign Historic Defence Agreement for 26 Rafale Marine Fighter Jets

New Delhi, April 28, 2025 – In a significant development, India and France formalized a landmark defence agreement on Monday for the acquisition of 26 Rafale Marine (Rafale-M) fighter jets for the Indian Navy. The deal, valued at over Rs 63,000 crore, was signed at the Defence Ministry headquarters in South Block, Delhi. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Navy Vice Chief Vice Admiral K. Swaminathan attended the signing ceremony, which was presided over by the French Ambassador to India.

The Cabinet Committee on Security had approved the deal earlier this month, marking a major step forward in enhancing India’s naval airpower. The contract will provide the Indian Navy with 22 single-seater and four twin-seater Rafale-M jets, which are equipped with cutting-edge technology and weaponry. These aircraft will operate from India’s aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, and complement the existing MiG-29K fleet.

The agreement also encompasses a comprehensive suite for fleet maintenance, logistical support, and personnel training. Under the offset obligations, the deal further promises the manufacturing of critical components and equipment in India, boosting the country’s indigenous defence capabilities. The deal reflects a strong commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative and will significantly strengthen India’s naval defence infrastructure.

As India seeks to modernize its armed forces and strengthen its strategic partnerships, the Rafale-M deal represents a key milestone in enhancing India’s naval defense capabilities.
