LPG Prices Rise by ₹50; No Retail Hike in Petrol & Diesel Despite Excise Duty Bump

BarakOutlet Desk, April 7, 2025: Silchar: In a move affecting households across the nation, the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, announced a ₹50 hike in domestic LPG cylinder prices effective immediately. The revised rates will impact both Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and general category consumers.

For general customers, the 14.2-kg LPG cylinder price has surged from ₹803 to ₹853, while Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries will now pay ₹553 per refill instead of ₹503.

Speaking to reporters, Minister Puri stated, “We assess these prices every two to three weeks. This revision is based on multiple factors including global trends and inventory valuations held by oil marketing companies.”

In tandem with this development, the government has also issued a notification regarding an increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre. The revised duty — ₹13/litre for petrol and ₹10/litre for diesel — will come into effect from April 8, 2025.

However, the Ministry has confirmed that there will be no immediate increase in the retail price of petrol and diesel. PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have been instructed to absorb the additional duty, ensuring consumers remain unaffected at the pump for now.

“We are working in a deregulated market. The OMCs will align retail prices with international trends. Since inventory was procured earlier at higher global rates, price adjustments will be gradual and considerate,” Puri added.

This dual announcement has sparked conversations around inflation and energy affordability, especially in semi-urban and rural regions where LPG and fuel cost hikes can ripple through everyday expenses.
