Punjab Gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Shifted to Silchar Jail Under PIT NDPS Act

Sandipta Halder: [Silchar, Assam, 23rd March, 2025]: In a significant move to dismantle transnational criminal networks, notorious gangster-cum-drug lord Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria has been transferred from Bathinda Central Jail in Punjab to Silchar Central Jail in Assam under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act, 1988. This marks the first instance of a Punjab gangster being detained under this act, reinforcing the authorities’ aggressive crackdown on organized crime.

High-Security Transfer to Silchar Jail

Following a directive issued on March 21, by the Joint Secretary (PIT-NDPS), a joint team comprising officials from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Punjab Police transported Bhagwanpuria from Bathinda to Chandigarh under heavy security. He was then flown via Delhi and Kolkata before being lodged in Silchar Central Jail on March 23. The transfer was meticulously overseen by a four-member NCB team to prevent any disruptions.

A Web of Crime: From Drug Trafficking to Cross-Border Smuggling

As per intelligence reports, Bhagwanpuria is a key player in an extensive drug trafficking syndicate linked to Pakistan-based suppliers and international networks in Canada and the US. His criminal dossier includes 128 cases, of which 12 are under the NDPS Act, reflecting his deep involvement in narcotics smuggling, extortion, arms trafficking, and organized crime.

Authorities have uncovered strong evidence indicating that Bhagwanpuria managed his operations from behind bars using smuggled mobile phones and encrypted communications. Statements from his co-accused further substantiate these claims, painting a picture of an elaborate, highly coordinated drug trade that extended beyond India’s borders.

Breaking the Criminal Nexus

Sources confirm that Bhagwanpuria’s operations involved not just narcotics smuggling but also illicit weapons trade, including pistols and revolvers. His detention under the PIT NDPS Act allows for incarceration without bail for up to one year, making this a crucial move in crippling his criminal empire.

Notably, this is the fourth such detention from Punjab under this stringent act. In August last year, three other alleged drug lords—Jaspal Singh alias Goldy, Akshay Chhabra, and Balwinder Singh alias Billa Havellian—were also shifted to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam under similar charges.

Authorities Tighten Grip on Drug Syndicates

This strategic relocation to Silchar Central Jail aims to disrupt Bhagwanpuria’s powerful grip over criminal operations in Punjab and neighboring regions. Officials believe that isolating high-profile gangsters from their local networks will significantly reduce the influence of drug cartels and organized crime.

With this decisive action, law enforcement agencies have sent a clear message—there will be no safe haven for criminals engaged in illicit drug trade and cross-border smuggling. The case remains under active investigation, with authorities closely monitoring Bhagwanpuria’s network for any further crackdowns.
