Sikkim increases weather monitoring by checking 67 stations throughout the state.

B O News Desk : Sikkim’s Science and Technology Department has completed a full inspection of 67 automatic weather stations (AWS) across the state, marking a significant move to upgrade its hydrometeorological observation network, officials said on Thursday.

The state-wide review assessed the functionality, data reliability, infrastructure health, and connectivity of each station, many of which are located in remote and high-altitude zones.

Officials said the exercise was essential to identify gaps and plan upgrades that will ensure more accurate and timely weather information.

“This extensive assessment is key to strengthening Sikkim’s weather-monitoring capacity, boosting climate resilience, and advancing disaster preparedness,” an official said.

The scientific team highlighted the critical need for dependable real-time data in a mountain state vulnerable to extreme weather, landslides, and flash floods.

They added that the enhanced observation network will improve early-warning systems, aid research, and support decision-making in environmental management, agriculture, and disaster risk reduction.
