Sushanta Chowdhury claims a 64% increase in domestic travel in Tripura.

B O News Desk : Tripura has witnessed a sharp rise in tourism, with domestic tourist arrivals increasing by 64.07 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year, state Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury announced on Sunday.

According to official figures, domestic arrivals jumped from 3.66 lakh in 2023 to 6.01 lakh in 2024.

Foreign tourist arrivals also grew, though at a slower pace, rising 36.15 per cent from 67,000 to 91,000 during the same period.

With these numbers, Tripura retained its position as the second-most visited Northeastern state by foreign tourists, after Sikkim.

Chowdhury, who also holds the Transport portfolio, described the performance as a “remarkable success” and credited Chief Minister Manik Saha, the people of Tripura, and the Tourism Department for their contributions.

The minister said the Centre has assured support for further strengthening the sector.

He recently met Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Delhi, apprising them of Tripura’s tourism initiatives and future plans.

“Both ministers assured all possible cooperation to boost tourism infrastructure in the state,” Chowdhury said.

During his meeting with Scindia, the minister sought funding assistance for upcoming projects aimed at showcasing Tripura’s cultural and natural heritage.

He also held discussions with Sitharaman, who, he said, expressed readiness to extend financial support for new initiatives.

Tourism Department Secretary Uttam Kumar Chakma and Director Prashant Badal Negi accompanied him during these meetings.

Chowdhury underlined that the government is committed to developing the state into a major tourism hub in the Northeast, leveraging both its cultural richness and natural beauty.
