Accidents On Umiam-Jorabat Highway Claims 25 Lives In 100 Days.

In a major cause of concern, a total of twenty-five people have tragically lost their lives in fatal road accident over the past 100 days along a stretch spanning 60-kilometre of the Umiam-Jorabet expressway connecting Guwahati and Shillong. This figure is as per official data.

Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police VS Rathore, on Wednesday, attributed speeding as the reason behind most of the accidents, saying that almost half of the victims do not hail from Meghalaya.

Several crashes were also caused by drunk driving in this section of the expressway which is becoming an accident-prone area.

Renowned for its breathtaking landscape, this stretch of the busy route is gradually becoming a death trap owing to the growing number of accident-related deaths. Authorities are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and enhanced road safety measures.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, a vehicle transporting domestic gas cylinders caught fire near the Kali temple at 8 mile, Jorabat. The vehicle was enroute to Patarkuchi, Sonapur, from Goalpara before the fire commenced due to mechanical failure.

The Hindustan Petroleum (HP) registered vehicle AS 32 C 2293 had bolted towards Patarkuchi with the cylinders still loaded when the fire broke out.

Jorabat traffic police together with the fire brigade responded quickly and managed to put out the fire, preventing a bigger disaster. Although no casualties were recorded, there was major traffic on the National highway for hours.
