Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma: NSA to Be Imposed on Anyone Making Anti-India Statements
BarakOutlet | April 26, 2025 | Assam: In a stern declaration, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that anyone found making anti-India statements or extending support to Pakistan — directly or indirectly — will be arrested under the National Security Act (NSA).
Speaking during the launch of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s manifesto for the upcoming two-phase panchayat elections in May 2025 at the party’s state headquarters in Guwahati, the Chief Minister asserted,
“We will arrest anyone who makes an anti-India statement under the NSA.”
This decisive statement follows the recent arrest of 11 individuals across Assam, including All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam, for allegedly making anti-India remarks concerning the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
Arrests Across Assam and Beyond
The Assam police on April 26 arrested Md. Mustak Ahmed from Saykut village for posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on Facebook. Additionally, Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya from Ramnagar and Md. Imran Hussain Borbhuiya from Malugram Ganiwa in Barak Valley were apprehended for pro-Pakistan comments.
The MLA from Dhing constituency, Aminul Islam, was arrested earlier on April 24 for reportedly linking the Pahalgam terror incident and the 2019 Pulwama attack to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Following his arrest, he was remanded to four days’ police custody by a local court in Nagaon.
On April 25, Assam police arrested seven more individuals for allegedly posting anti-India content on social media. Elsewhere in the Northeast, Tripura police arrested two persons, while Meghalaya police made similar arrests. The detainees included a journalist, a lawyer, a university student, and a cleric, indicating a widespread crackdown across the region.
“Nehru’s Strategic Blunder” and India’s Course Correction
CM Sarma also reignited historical debates by criticizing the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, signed by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Describing it as one of India’s “greatest strategic blunders,” Sarma stated:
“Despite India’s natural upper riparian advantage, Nehru, under pressure from the American administration and the World Bank, handed over 80% of the Indus basin waters to Pakistan.”
He emphasized that India was restricted to only the eastern rivers — Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej — while Pakistan retained full control over the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers.
“Pakistan received 135 MAF of water annually, while India was left with just 33 MAF,” Sarma noted, highlighting the long-term adverse impact on India’s agricultural and strategic strength.
However, Sarma praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent decision to initiate India’s withdrawal from the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a “historic correction of a six-decade-old injustice.”
“This bold move weakens Pakistan’s agriculture-dependent economy and asserts India’s sovereign rights over its rivers, marking the rise of a new, assertive India,” he added.
