
Assam Government Declares Paid Holiday on May 2 for Panchayat Polls in Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi Districts
Silchar, April 30: The Government of Assam has announced a paid holiday on Thursday, May 2, 2025, for employees across various sectors in view of the first phase of the Panchayat General Elections. The order, issued by the Labour Welfare Department under notification no. 459823/117 dated April 29, 2025, aims to facilitate smooth participation of voters in the democratic process.
The holiday will be applicable to all persons employed in tea plantations, shops and establishments, factories, commercial establishments, industries, banking institutions, and other workplaces in the districts of Cachar, Hailakandi, and the newly created Sribhumi district where polling will be held.
The notification mandates that eligible voters working in the aforementioned sectors be granted paid leave to cast their votes without any deductions or penal action. Employers have been directed to ensure full compliance.
Furthermore, a similar paid holiday has also been declared for May 7, 2025, in connection with the second phase of the Panchayat elections for 13 other districts across the state.


This move is in accordance with Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which mandates granting leave to voters employed in establishments, businesses, and industrial undertakings on the day of polling.
The Assam government has reiterated that no employee should be denied the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
