Authorities Call for Quicker Completion of NH-6 Repair Work, Which Is Beset by Delays.

In a significant development, concerns were raised over slow progress in key sections of the highway in Meghalaya following a joint inspection of the ongoing repair work on National Highway 6(NH-6) that was conducted on March 27.

Santa Mary Shylla, MLA of Sutnga-Saipung Constituency, along with Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District Shivansh Awasthi, Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, NHAI officials, contractors and other concerned authorities led the inspection. The team urged the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to accelerate the work after reviewing the repair status.

NHAI officials reported that 65% of the repairs had been completed, with the remaining work expected to conclude within two months, during a review meeting preceding the inspection. However, beyond Sonapur, slow progress was observed, particularly in the Kuliang, Umkiang and Ratacherra stretches.

To facilitate faster work, the deputy commissioner emphasized that the administration has restricted heavy vehicle movement between 9 am and 5 pm and remains in constant coordination with NHAI. In order to expedite repairs, he also instructed NHAI to increase manpower and machinery.

The superintendent of police voiced concerns regarding traffic congestion and identified critical zones where frequent vehicle breakdowns worsen the situation. To reduce commuter inconvenience, he urged NHAI to prioritize these areas and ensure completion within two weeks.
