Bengaluru honours Zubeen Garg, an Assamese legend.
B O News Desk : The Assam Society of Bangalore (ASoB) organised a heartfelt Shraddhanjali for the late music icon Zubeen Garg on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in HSR Layout. From 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, the stadium became a sea of emotions as nearly 5,000 people — largely from the Assamese community — gathered to pay their last respects.
For ASoB, Zubeen was more than an artist; he was family. Since 2007, he had performed ten times for the society, the most recent being in April this year. His absence was deeply felt, yet his presence lingered in the voices, tears, and memories of those who had come to honor him.
Among the attendees was Bommanahalli MLA Sathish Reddy, who joined the community in mourning and paid tribute on behalf of the people of Karnataka. The Shraddhanjali, supported by the local administration, was conducted in a spirit of peace and harmony.
A symbolic and unique gesture marked the evening — all flowers offered during the ceremony were collected and recycled into compost, reflecting Zubeen Da’s lifelong love for nature. In continuation of this spirit, ASoB pledged to plant 1,000 saplings during this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in his memory. The Durga Puja festivities will also be dedicated entirely to Zubeen’s music, ensuring his melodies continue to inspire.
The society further announced its intent to preserve Zubeen’s vast artistic contributions — over 40,000 songs — through a digital museum. While ASoB is ready to provide technical expertise, members stressed the need for government support to address issues of copyright and archiving.
For Assam, Zubeen Garg was not just a singer but a heartbeat. In Bengaluru, far from his homeland, that heartbeat was felt once again as ASoB vowed to carry forward his legacy through music, culture, and community service.
