Congress Warns CM with Legal Action Over Remarks on Women
BarakOutlet News Service, Udharbond | April 29: The All India Mahila Congress has demanded a public apology from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma within 24 hours for his recent comments regarding women. If the apology is not issued, the party has warned of legal proceedings.
Addressing the media at a press meet in Silchar, All India Mahila Congress President and senior Congress leader Netta D’Souza condemned the Chief Minister’s statements as “insensitive and derogatory” toward women. She was accompanied by prominent party figures including AICC member and former Union Minister Sushmita Dev, Congress Working Committee member Jairam Ramesh, and local leaders.
D’Souza alleged that CM Sarma’s remarks reflect a deeply patriarchal mindset and are unacceptable in a civil society. She demanded that the Chief Minister take back his words and offer an unconditional apology. “If he fails to do so within 24 hours, we will be compelled to initiate legal action under relevant sections of the law,” she stated.
Congress leaders argued that Sarma’s statement not only disrespected women but also undermined the spirit of equality enshrined in the Constitution. The party accused the BJP-led state government of systematically attacking women’s dignity and suppressing their voices through regressive policies.

The press meet saw a sharp attack on the BJP’s women-centric narratives, with speakers claiming that reality starkly contradicts the government’s rhetoric. “Women in Assam are facing growing insecurity, unemployment, and humiliation under BJP rule,” said D’Souza.
The Mahila Congress has planned protests across Assam and vowed to take this issue to a national level if no satisfactory response is given by the Chief Minister.
