Only Deputy Commissioners may issue adult Aadhaar cards: Assam CM

B O News Desk : In a decisive move aimed at curbing illegal immigration, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has announced a major overhaul in Aadhaar issuance norms.

The chief minister said that Aadhaar cards for adult citizens will soon be issued exclusively through the offices of Deputy Commissioners (DCs), rather than via common service centers or third-party vendors as is the norm in many parts of the country.

“Very soon, we will implement a decision where Adhar cards to adult citizens will be issued only by DCs. This will ensure that no illegal immigrant can get an Aadhar made and we can track and push them back easily,” CM Sarma posted on X.

He emphasized that the move aims to prevent illegal immigrants from fraudulently obtaining Aadhaar cards through strict scrutiny and verification.

Sharma stated that the move is designed to plug the gaps in the system that have, in the past, allowed foreign nationals to access Indian identity documents.

Aadhaar, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is a 12-digit identity number that serves as proof of both identity and residence in India.

“Last night we pushed back 20 more Bangladeshis as part of our ongoing efforts to detect and push back illegal infiltrators. The decision to toughen Aadhar issuance rules will only aid our efforts in this direction,” the chief minister said.

By routing the issuance of Aadhaar through DCs, the government hopes to implement stricter verification procedures and enhance the scrutiny of documentation before granting the all-important biometric identity.
