Three Members of Gaurav Gogoi’s Family Hold Foreign Citizenship, Claims Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
BarakOutlet Correspondent, Guwahati | May 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, raising questions about his family’s citizenship status following Gogoi’s criticism over Sarma’s Pakistan trip remarks.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, CM Sarma stated that three members of Gaurav Gogoi’s immediate family are foreign nationals. Referring to recent political developments, Sarma said, “Gogoi must first prove that both his sons are Indian citizens. If he can do that, I will resign from the Chief Minister’s post.” Sarma claimed that despite Gogoi’s Indian political standing, his family background raises serious questions, particularly given that two of Gogoi’s children reportedly hold foreign citizenship.
Sarma further said that Gaurav Gogoi recently returned from a trip to Pakistan. “The people of Assam deserve to know what business took him to Pakistan. For 15 days, Gogoi toured Pakistan, and yet he never clarified the purpose of his visit. What message does this send to the people of Assam?” the Chief Minister questioned.
Adding to his criticism, Sarma noted that Gogoi previously lost his Indian passport due to acquiring foreign citizenship. He alleged that Gogoi’s remarks on his foreign visits and connections are misleading and politically motivated.
“If he claims to uphold Indian values, then why did he go to Pakistan and maintain silence about it? In politics, one cannot escape accountability with vague answers,” Sarma said, reiterating his demand for a clear public response from the Congress MP.
As of the time of this report, Gaurav Gogoi has not issued any official statement in response to these allegations.
