Two separate incidents in Guwahati have raised public safety concerns amid ongoing construction and adverse weather. On April 22, Ramia Das was electrocuted near the under-construction Chandmari flyover following prolonged rainfall. She was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition and under close observation.

In a separate case, a vehicle overturned near the District Transport Office (DTO) in Betkuchi after the driver lost control and hit a divider. While no injuries were reported, the incident briefly disrupted traffic. Authorities responded promptly, and an investigation into the cause is underway.

Two Cyclists Die in a Tragic Accident in Bishwanath.

Assam witnessed two tragic road accidents recently. On the Mijika-Tinisuti road in Bishwanath district, cyclists Nand Koya (57) and Sunil Birja (34) lost their lives in a hit-and-run incident, with the involved vehicle later surrendering to the police. Meanwhile, on National Highway 37 near Lakhowjan, a Royal Enfield bike collided with an oil tanker, leaving rider Rajiv Sahu (28) dead and Suraj Goyal severely injured. The tanker has been seized, and investigations for both accidents are ongoing.

Heroin and Yaba Tablets Totaling Rs 71 Crore Found in Assam, Two Arrested.

Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) seized Rs 71 crore worth of banned narcotics, including 2,70,000 Yaba tablets and 520 grams of heroin, during a raid in Kamrup district’s Amingaon locality. Two vehicles transporting the drugs were intercepted, leading to the arrest of two couriers. The operation was led by STF Chief Parthasarathi Mahanta, with assistance from Additional SP Kalyan Pathak. Legal proceedings and investigations are underway to dismantle the trafficking network.

Starting on May 1, the center will switch from the FASTag system to GPS-based toll collection.

“The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will introduce a GPS-based toll system from May 1, progressively replacing the current FASTag system, as announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. This new system will use India’s indigenous Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to charge users based on the distance traveled on toll roads. The toll amount will be automatically deducted from a linked digital wallet, eliminating toll booths, reducing congestion, and enhancing travel efficiency.”

To safeguard Hoolock Gibbons, a unique overhead bridge was built in Jorhat.

In Assam, innovative measures have been implemented to safeguard endangered species. A specialized overhead bridge in Jorhat now allows Hoolock Gibbons to safely cross railway tracks, mitigating risks from high-speed trains and electrification wires. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to expand similar structures across the state to protect local fauna and biodiversity.

Additionally, earlier this year, four loop bridges were installed in Bongaigaon district for Golden Langurs to safely cross busy roadways, addressing threats posed by infrastructure. These bridges act as wildlife corridors, enabling primates to move freely while avoiding dangerous encounters with vehicles.
