The suspension, triggered after Saha spent 48 hours in CBI custody, is in line with university protocol. Saha was apprehended while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3.43 lakh related to the award of supply contracts for scientific equipment. Investigations suggest the incident stemmed from a dispute over construction noise, which escalated into a fatal confrontation. The Meghalaya High Court has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to complete improvement works on the Jowai-Ratacherra stretch of NH-6 and submit a progress report by August 18, 2025. During a recent PIL hearing, the court noted that adverse weather has slowed construction, with current completion rates at 75% for the Jowai-Wahiajer sector and 80% for the Wahiajer-Ratacherra stretch. The court has extended the reporting deadline and appointed an amicus curiae to monitor the project’s advancement.

Meghalaya is positioned at the bottom among states in the most recent Performance Grading Index, according to a report.

Meghalaya has emerged as the lowest-performing state in the Ministry of Education’s latest Performance Grading Index (PGI) for 2023-24, scoring just 417.9 points and landing in the lowest band of the nationwide assessment. The PGI 2.0 report, which evaluates states and Union Territories across six key domains—including learning outcomes, infrastructure, and access—found that Chandigarh leads all regions with a score of 703, yet no state or UT reached the top four performance bands, highlighting a significant scope for improvement across India’s school education system. While 24 states and UTs improved their scores this year, others including Bihar, Jharkhand, and Karnataka saw declines, underscoring ongoing challenges in educational quality and equity.

A Tripura rights tribunal criticises NHIDCL for delaying land compensation for seven years.

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to submit a report by July 11, following complaints that around 20 families in Jampui Hills, North Tripura, have yet to receive compensation for land acquired for a national highway project over seven years ago. Despite the absence of any legal disputes or ownership issues, and the completion of all administrative procedures, NHIDCL has withheld payment, citing project alignment changes and the need for a new Detailed Project Report. The THRC, taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, noted that this ongoing delay constitutes a violation of the affected families’ human rights and has also sought a report from the Land Acquisition Collector, North Tripura, to address the grievances highlighted in recent media reports.

LPG truck drivers in Manipur have launched protests and strikes after the assault of a driver by armed men suspected to be police commandos at the Sekmai gas bottling plant. The ongoing demonstrations have disrupted the supply of petroleum products, including LPG cylinders, petrol, and diesel, across the state. Drivers have parked around 150 tankers along NH 37, halting distribution and prompting panic buying among residents.
