Manipur: Tension between Meitei and Kuki people in Imphal East is sparked by a farmland dispute.

A clash erupted over farmland near Sadu Lampak village in Imphal East district, Manipur, on Sunday morning between Meitei and Kuki villagers. The confrontation began around 10 am when a Meitei farmer attempted to plough his field but was challenged by Kuki villagers, who claimed the land as their own. Meitei villagers allege that Kuki settlers from nearby Sopheng have encroached on over 20 sangam (about 12.4 acres) of paddy fields abandoned since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. The situation escalated as more people arrived, resulting in injuries—including a Meitei youth struck by a catapult shot. Security forces quickly deployed to the scene, using tear gas and mock bombs to disperse the crowd. Authorities confirmed the situation is now under control and urged the public to avoid spreading rumors.
