Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Manipur Police, seized illegal foreign cigarettes worth Rs 2 crores from Savomphai in Jiribam district on 20 May 2025. The contraband, comprising 98 bags each containing 1000 cigarette packets, was being smuggled via boat from Tipaimukh and was intended for Bangladesh. Two individuals were apprehended. This operation highlights Assam Rifles’ resolute stance against smuggling and their continued efforts to dismantle cross-border illicit networks.

“The curfew in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, initially imposed due to tensions between the Zomi and Hmar tribal groups, has been lifted as of April 16. Although the law and order situation has improved, security measures remain heightened following a recent explosion at the Jamsuan and Sahei road junction. Local authorities and the Central Village Defence Force have condemned the incidents, pledging thorough investigations to address residents’ safety concerns.”

Imphal West erupted in protest on Wednesday after unidentified gunmen opened fire on an orphanage in the Sagolband area. Though no injuries were reported, the attack sparked outrage across the community. Residents held a sit-in, demanding immediate justice and greater protection for the shelter’s vulnerable children. The orphanage manager, Khaiden Ongbi Romita, called the act a “deep injustice” and urged authorities to ensure such violence is never repeated.

Tripura is set to expand its bamboo industry with the proposed Integrated Bamboo Park in Kailashahar’s Chandipur block, Unakoti District. Under the Tripura Bamboo Mission, the Rs. 162.92 crore project aims to boost bamboo-based industrial growth by establishing modern units for value-added products like activated charcoal, biodegradable utensils, and eco-friendly bamboo fibre cups. Awaiting central approval, the initiative builds on Tripura’s legacy of bamboo innovation, following the success of the RK Nagar Bamboo Park established in 2007.
