Union Cabinet approves bill for establishing Indian Institute of Management in Guwahati

The Union Cabinet has approved a bill to establish the 22nd Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, making it the second IIM in the Northeast after Shillong. With over ₹500 crore allocated and IIM Ahmedabad as the mentor institute, the project aims to provide high-quality management education, boost entrepreneurship, and strengthen capacity-building in sectors critical to regional and national growth. The new IIM, to be located at Marabhita in Kamrup district, will further enhance Guwahati’s role as an educational hub and help bridge regional disparities in access to premier institutions. The bill will be introduced in Parliament during the current session.

Mizoram is set to join the Indian Railways network for the first time with the completion of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line under the Northeast Frontier Railway. The 51.38 km route, featuring tunnels, bridges, and four new stations, will bring rail connectivity to Sairang, near Aizawl, significantly boosting accessibility to the hill state. In August 2025, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) signed a two-year MoU with the Mizoram Government to promote tourism, develop local travel services, and highlight the state’s cultural and natural attractions. IRCTC also plans to include Aizawl in its “Discover NE Beyond Guwahati” special tourist train, focusing on budget-friendly and sustainable travel.

The Meghalaya Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) has urged residents to seek immediate hospital care at the earliest signs of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), after recent cases in Pune raised national concern. The rare neurological disorder — often triggered by infections such as dengue, Zika, gastroenteritis, or respiratory illnesses — can cause weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, loss of balance, and in severe cases, breathing or speech problems. The advisory warns against self-medication and stresses hygiene, safe food, mosquito protection, and a nutritious diet to prevent infections and related complications.

Assam: To improve cleanliness, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation introduces “Sikun Guwahati-Mur Guwahati.”

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched “Sikun Guwahati–Mur Guwahati”, a citywide cleanliness campaign aimed at making Guwahati cleaner, greener, and more liveable. The initiative, unveiled by Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah in the presence of Mayor Mrigen Sarania and GMC Commissioner Dr. MS Lakshami Priya, coincided with the third anniversary of the current GMC Council.

The campaign focuses on waste segregation at source, ward-level cleanliness competitions, improved solid and liquid waste infrastructure, and mass public awareness drives to inspire civic pride and behavioural change. Safety gear was distributed to workers, and gratitude was expressed to Safai Mitras for their role in Guwahati’s Swachh Survekshan 2024 performance. A ‘GIS Geo Hub’ portal was also launched to support better urban planning through detailed location-based data.
