On October 6, the Bangladesh Army is prepared to welcome Pakistani Lt Gen Tabassum Haidar.

Bangladesh’s Armed Forces Division under Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus is set to roll out a red-carpet welcome for Pakistan Army Lieutenant General Tabassum Haidar, Director General of Joint Staff at Chaklala, when he arrives in Dhaka on October 6. This marks the highest-level Pakistani military visit since the Yunus-led interim government took power in August 2024 after ousting Sheikh Hasina. Haidar’s visit includes meetings with senior Bangladeshi military leaders, ceremonial honours, and trips to defence institutions in Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar, reflecting intensified defence engagement between the two countries under the interim regime.

The Chakma student body calls on India and the international world to take action in response to the Khagrachari massacre.

The All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) has strongly condemned the massacre in Guimara, Khagrachari, Bangladesh, where the Bangladesh Army allegedly killed at least four indigenous Jumma people, injured over fifty, and set villages ablaze. The attack followed peaceful protests triggered by the gang rape of a 12-year-old Marma girl, with survivors reporting indiscriminate firing by army forces and arson by armed settlers. AICSU has submitted a memorandum to the Indian Prime Minister urging urgent diplomatic intervention, humanitarian aid, and international investigation into these atrocities, describing them as state-backed ethnic persecution and systematic genocide against the Jumma peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The memorandum calls for summoning the Bangladeshi envoy, downgrading diplomatic ties, and pressing for UN intervention to protect indigenous lives and ensure justice.

TVK asks the court to investigate the stampede in Tamil Nadu that left 40 dead and 67 injured.

The death toll in the Karur stampede climbed to 40 on Sunday after another injured person died at the government hospital. Among the deceased were 17 women, 13 men, and nine children. Tamil Nadu Health Secretary P. Senthil Kumar said 67 injured remain hospitalized, with two in critical condition, while 26 others were treated and discharged. Actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhaga party has sought an independent probe into the tragedy, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex-gratia payments of Rs. 2 lakh for each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured, expressing condolences over the loss of lives.

Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) chief Hagrama Mohilary will be sworn in as the new Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council on October 3, following the party’s landslide victory with 28 of 40 seats. The BPF has chosen Mohilary as Legislature Party leader, with Rihon Daimari, Derhasat Basumatary and Maheswar Basumatary taking key council roles. The swearing-in, expected to be attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, will also mark the Governor’s birthday. Mohilary has pledged to prioritise development and cultural initiatives, including a memorial park and statue of late singer Zubeen Garg in Kokrajhar, while extending invitations to all political parties for cooperation.

A police encounter in the Goalpara area of Assam claimed the lives of four dacoits.

Four dacoits were killed in a police encounter in Goalpara district’s Ghiladubi area on Sunday after they opened fire at a checkpoint near the Assam-Meghalaya border. Goalpara SSP Nabaneet Mahanta said the gang, under police watch for days, was planning a possible kidnapping or other crimes. In retaliation to their gunfire, police shot back, fatally injuring all four, who were later declared dead at a hospital. Security forces recovered pistols, walkie-talkies, mobile phones, and cartridges from the vehicle, and investigations are underway to trace other members of the gang.

Sushanta Chowdhury claims a 64% increase in domestic travel in Tripura.

Tripura has witnessed a sharp surge in tourism, with domestic tourist arrivals rising by 64.07 per cent in 2024 to 6.01 lakh from 3.66 lakh the previous year. Foreign tourist arrivals also grew by 36.15 per cent, reaching 91,000, helping Tripura retain its position as the second-most visited Northeastern state by international visitors after Sikkim. Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury credited the success to Chief Minister Manik Saha, the people of Tripura, and the Tourism Department, and said the Centre has assured support for new projects to showcase the state’s cultural and natural heritage. He held meetings in Delhi with Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and Nirmala Sitharaman, both of whom assured cooperation and financial aid to strengthen Tripura’s tourism infrastructure.
